Gestational Diabetes Diet

Here are some basic details on gestational diabetes and why it’s different and similar to regular diabetes. It’s a type of diabetes that occurs to women during gestation. It is characterized by high blood sugar during pregnancy. Many women experience this during the second half of pregnancy, starting at around 15 weeks. For some reason some pregnant women don’t have sufficient insulin in their blood to control the surge in blood sugar. The condition is said to stabilize right after the woman gives birth. While a woman may write this off as something temporary, the danger it poses to the baby inside the womb is no less than the danger of the real diabetes disease.

If the condition becomes serious enough, the chances of the child surviving the rest of the pregnancy become slimmer. Moreover, the infant becomes predisposed to developing childhood diabetes. At the very least, the mother may give birth to a larger infant, which may compromise her relative safety during childbirth.

The surest way to find out if the woman has gestational diabetes is to do a blood test. But there are some indicators that the woman may be sick with this disease. Some symptoms of diabetes include unexplained thirst, more frequent urination, blurring of vision, eating a lot but not gaining weight, and infections especially in the vaginal region. If a woman is diagnosed with gestational diabetes, she should work with her doctor to develop a proper meal plan. Having diabetes means some nutrients may be lacking, and this could directly affect the baby. The treatment options should be patterned after the usual treatment for type 2 diabetes. Reduction of carbohydrates in the diet and totally eliminating sugary food like chocolates and candy can be a good start.

To control blood sugar is the main goal. This means eating less carbs and eating more vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables. The woman can eat smaller but more frequent meals. Powdered fruit juice should also be avoided. If the mother decides to keep juice as a part of her diet, she should stick to natural fruits freshly squeezed.

Low fat dairy and lean meat products are advisable. Lean parts of tuna and chicken breast meat may comprise a large part of the diet plan for a woman with gestational diabetes. Egg whites and nuts are particularly helpful. Peanut butter can be eaten sparingly to curb cravings for sweets as well as to provide protein.

As far as vegetables go, the woman should consume more lettuce and radish. Mushrooms, peppers and organic potatoes are also good. Whole wheat breads are always around as alternatives to white bread.
